Harry Potter question
purely based on Harry potter lore
Considering wizards' magic is similar to muggle's science...
Do you think wizards have an understanding of magic similar to muggle understanding of science?
(why do I ask this? No idea either.)

No.
Because scientifically....if you tell me a child killed a grown man...I still want to see a corpse.
Magically if a child kills a baby, not only is a corpse not needed, but the understanding of how powerful this child, and a record of this child's power are not taken. Why would you not record the strength of this child indepth through study?
Why so magic can exist you have no clue about?
Also generally most teachers do not have the knowledge of Dumbledore.

I would dig up the video and tells you where and when but I don't wanna, lazy, in one of the movie, when Ron's father ask harry potter what rubber ducky is for, (or something of that sort) and him being a man interested in "inventing stuffs" or rather enchanting stuffs, i say their understanding of magic is not the same as muggle's understanding of science.
i hope that was clear.

a wizards's magic is not understandable because it is MAGICAL. if it was explainable in understandable logic, it wouldn't be termed magic.

Well, if there is no rulebook (like DnD 3/4), there is no limitation.
If there is no limitation, there are basically no rules. No rules - not everything can be explained, making everything strange.

In fact, I didn't ask wether magic was explained or even explainable in coherent terms. I was wondering if Wizards understood magic as we understand our science. We have understood a lot of physical phenomenon and some branch of Physic sound like they were taken straight from a Sci-Fi novel (codifying the nature of the universe, parallel universes, those kind of things). I remember a line in one of the book implying that some wizard's job was to invent spells, to they make them up like a scientist would - analysing the effects of magic and putting it to use - or simply try random formulas and hope they don't blow themselves up.

Yeah I remember that scene. Though that just shows that wizards have either little knowledge of muggles or that they really didn't evolve with science/mass-production/I-tought-I-had-a-third-item-there (or that M. Weasley is an idiot). That doesnt mean they don't understand magic.

Yes. Magic is their science.

Probably I suppose. We know what we need to know and what we don't know we bend what we do know to fit. They do pretty much the same thing.

Well, in my opinion I think that the wizards have a far greater understanding of magic than we do of science. But yeah, they definitely don't understand it all, because there are always new spells being 'invented'. One good example was Sectumsempra, which was invented by Snape. This spell and others that had been mentioned throughout the books show that there is definitely a lot more that hasn't been discovered yet.
